John served on the destroyer HMS Veteran from October 1939 till June 1941. Took part in the Norway operations of 1940 brought home survivors of HMS Glorious, Acasta and Ardent. Helped sink German invasion barges of Ostend. Transferred to Anti Submarine Warfare trawler Norwich City
Alexander was awarded the Mine Sweeper & Anti Submarine badge in November 1940 and served on anti submarine boats for most of the war.
